Journeyman Programme

Aim

The aim of the Journeyman Programme is to produce skilled workers suitable for immediate employment in his/her occupational area upon graduation.

 

 

Scope

Journeyman training is offered in the Mechanical, Electrical/Electronics, Welding, Industrial Maintenance and Joinery Trades.

 

Entry Requirements

Candidates for the programme must have:-

  • A National Craftsman Certificate or equivalent.
  • At least 3 CXC or G.C.E. passes or equivalent at grade A,B,C, or 1,2,3 including:
    • English
    • Mathematics
    • Technical Drawing
    • Mechanical Engineering Technology
    • Building Construction Technology
    • Electrical/Electronics Technology
    • Any of the Sciences

 

Programme Structure

Journeyman training is an intensive 3 ½ year programme.  Approximately 2 years will be industrial attachment for hands-on training.  Trainees receive a stipend while on industrial attachment after an initial year of training in a Sills Development Centre.  Throughout the 3 ½ years period, trainees will spend approximately 75% of their time on practical work at the Training Centers and industry, and 25% pursuing relevant occupational theory.

 

Certification

On successful completion trainees will be awarded a National Journeyman Certificate approved by MIC, the German certifying body and the Ministry of Science Technology & Tertiary Education (MSTTE).  The Certificate is awarded at level III of ACTT National Qualification Framework.

 

Accreditation

The Journeyman Programme is offered under the umbrella of the National Skills Development Programme (NSDP) managed by the Metal Industries Company Limited (MIC) in collaboration with the German Chamber of Crafts and Trades, and the ICON Institute of Aachen, Germany.  MIC has been registered by the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT) as a post secondary tertiary education service provider for a period of three (3) years.

 

Cost

Tuition fees for the Journeyman Programme will be covered by G.A.T.E. Trainees will, however be required to contribute to the cost of training texts, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and exercise clothing.
